Hi Everyone Firts of all I am new to Forums, let alone PMR-446 Radio's so please go easy on me!!! I have recently purchased some Icom F22 and one F25 radio to use with my mates on a biking trip to europe next month, but I am struggling with them. The first one I purchased works fine and I can communicate with my sons on their litte Pmr radio's perfectly but the 3 I recently purchased will communicate with each other but not with the other PMR radio's - it's almost like they are locked together to only communicate with each other. I have downloaded the relevant manuals but there is nothing in there to tell me how to 'factory restet' them - if that is what I need to do. Also the Icom F25 starts beeping and flashing the LED once you take it past Ch 3.???? Can anybody help me - I am more than happy to call someone if they can talk me through it Kind regards.

Hi, The reason for this is that the Icoms add a subaudible tone to your transmission. The cheap PMRs of your son don't care about that tone, and are able hear you.

However, the Icoms check for the same tone in each received transmission. As long as the tone doesn't match, you won't hear a thing. What you should do is make sure the tones match on each of the 16 channels. I'm afraid you can't program them by hand, but will need a special cable and software. You can find more info in your user manual. PMR446 is a license free service using 8 specific channels with radios transmitting with a maximum of 500mw power output with set top fixed antenna. The ICOM radios you have purchased will not strictly be legal for use on PMR446 as they have a higher power output and removable antennas and are designed to be used on different frequencies (channels) that you need a license for.

Saying that a lot of people (our family included) use higher power radios with more efficient antennas on the PMR446 frequencies. At some time someone has most likely programmed the F22 with some or all of the PMR446 frequencies and so can 'talk' to your sons radio.

The other radio has been set to work on different channels or is faulty perhaps. To complicate matters further the radios could all be on the same frequency but still not communicate with each other as there are ctcss and dcs tones that either have to switched off or all be same on all the radios for them to communicate with each other. There are other users of this forum with much more knowledge than I have and may be able to assist you further.

Hi AutocomBoy I'll have to look up the F25 but from memory the F22S is a UHF 16 channel radio, black, with CTCSS only? Hope thats right - haven't had my first coffee of the day yet Assuming I have the right radio in mind, There is no way to re-program or reset these other than by re-programming the radio using a PC & interface lead the interface lead plugs into the earphone socket and into the serial port on a pc.

Or via a USB to serial adapter the software ( I think is called CS-11 or CS-12.CS-11 seems to ring more bells here. I think the programming lead is called an OPC-8 but don't take that as gospel - it IS however the same one as used on the T8E ham radio handheld I may have a copy, but my radio programming PC has suffered a catastrophic hard disk failure and getting a copy back from the disk image will be like pulling individual blades of straw from a bale of hay! One thing I do remember about the F22S is that the most common fault when trying to re-program them is that the earth breaks on the earphone socket through repeated (ab)use which prevents programming. You need to run a loop of copper wire around the barrel of the programing lead and touch that to the earth of the microphone socket during reading and writing from/to the radio. So your best course of action is:. get the bits or find someone to reprogram your icom. get hold of one of your mates radios and find out what channels and lock tones they are programmed with - if they are DCS based rather than CTCSS based you will not be able to inter-work and they will need to change theirs to CTCSS.

once you have the channels and codes reprogram the radios - by the way -dont be surprised though if some dealers refuse to program PMR446 channels into such a radio. One final thought - the ONLY place in the UHF radio spectrum across the whole of Europe that you can 'hide in plain sight' with illegal radios are the 8 PMR 446 unlicenced channels - they are between 446.0625 and 446.09375.

If your radios are on any other channels you will stick out like a sore thumb. Hope that helps regards BB PS (I'll look up the F25S and see what that does ). Right let me clear this up, this is what it sounds like you've done: Both the f-22 and f-25 come in licensed and licence free versions. The licence free versions (which are pre-programmed with the same 446 freqs and ctcss tones) are: F22SR F25SR There are also two licensed versions of each radio F12S - 2 channel 5 watt VHF F12 - 16 channel 5 watt VHF F22S - 2 channel 4 watt UHF F22 - 16 channel 4 watt UHF F15 - 16 channel 5 watt VHF F15S - 4 channel 5 watt VHF F25 - 16 channel 4 watt UHF F25S - 4 channel 4 watt UHF Sounds like you have one 'SR' version and then one licensed version.

That 'could' be good or bad It may be an indication that memory channel 4 is simply not programmed (which is a 'good' scenario) It may be that channel 4 has been programmed with a frequency that is outside its approved working range (This is 'good' if it goes away when you bring it in line by re-programming it, otherwise 'bad' as it could indicate a memory or CPU failure.

Hello I'd say you have an Icom F22SR or F22 (Pre-programmed to PMR446) and the others Icom F25, they will be programmed to private frequencies (and most likely have CTCSS & DTCSS programmed for extra encryption). With the F25, when you start to hear the beep and see the LED flash, that is an unprogrammed channel.

What you will need to do is get hold of some software (CS-F14), and programme them. Or you can sell them, and purchase some Icom F25SR 's. CS-F11 will programme Icom F22/21. CS-F14 will programme Icom F25/15. To Programme. You will need to programme these frequencies, leave Tx & Rx the same and make sure all CTCSS/DTCSS codes are blank.
