A wonderful SNES collection of the homebrew sort. Including those ROM's that are hacked to change the way they are played and translations to non-region friendly games that were not released in English! Have fun with this pack, it is unofficial and has some very good hacks, the translations are also very helpful for those who wanted to play games that were released out of region. Jul 15, 2012 A complete (finishes the game, with 59% items) playthrough of the 'Eris 2012' ROM hack of Super Metroid, by DigitalMantra. You can download the hack here: h.
When you say you have the correct ROM, is it the headered version (3,073KB)? quote='Quietus'Remember that Digital Mantra's hacks were created for a headered ROM, not unheadered. 99% of hacks usually use the unheadered version, but not his. The ROM you need should be 3,073 in size, not 3,072./quoteIf you have the correct ROM and the correct patch, then there's nothing that can go wrong, unless you get the occasional hack that doesn't like a specific emulator, like Redesign on later ZSNES versions (for some people). My revised version of Eris will be available soon. Changes will be:.Many rooms have had subtle aesthetic changes.
Some much more obvious than others.A few areas that had complaints are now easier to get through.Beginning is more linear until you get morph. Also more linear until you get bombs. This reduces getting too far ahead of yourself.Main upgrade progression is less linear after bombs. This reduces the amount of backtracking. Example: You don't need grapple to get charge, you don't need supers to get spazer, you don't need powerbombs to get ice, etc.A few graphical changes to the map and stuff. The 'last report' lore is changed entirely. Some enemies take less damage.Important upgrades and pathways have better hints. Some other shit. Basically, there was stuff that bugged me since release.

Major aesthetic touch ups in numerous locations. Many items have been moved around for a refreshing 100% experience. Hints and blockades are given early on, as to prevent a 'world is your oyster' situation when you're underpowered. Upgrade order has a more strict guideline, giving the game a more challenging and rewarding feel. While many loved the non-linearity, that is still present in most of Eris.
There's some new coding, a re-vamped HUDD screen, menu/map, a new 'Final Report' Lore and a few extra rooms. It's easier when it was too hard, and harder when it was too easy. In general, things just look nicer, and play better as if you were on a console. This is still Eris, just much better. What's new since the 2009 version? In general, things just look nicer, and play better as if you were on a console. This is still Eris, just much better. Just beat the game. I'd like to say that a lot of things were well hidden and fun to find. Unfortunately though, I got lost like 2/3's of the way through it. I couldn't find the passageway that lead to the spring ball and the door across from it. The design of the map looked so weird, it was like so clumped up together instead of spread out like the original SM is.
But overall, the hack was amazing, and the visuals were far greater than any other aspect of the game. I also enjoyed the variation of sounds. If you were low on health, it would make that sound like an atom dying from the spaceship, and the purple metroid room, the metroids made a sound similar to breaking glass from the tube. I was a little disappointed with the music selection though. Not once did I hear green brinstar music, or any crateria music. Just beat the game. I searched and it appears no one has made a thread about this hack. I don't know why considering it's freaking amazing. The reason is because it doesn't feel like a hack. Or at the very least, it feels like a very high-production hack. It has new graphics, which is probably the biggest factor in this hack's atmosphere. I think what I like most though is that unlike other hacks, Eris doesn't have stupid pixel-perfect jumps or long chasms you need IBJ up. The difficulty instead comes from the enemies being slightly beefed up.
This makes exploration much less frustrating because you can easily go from one place to another without worrying about screwing up a jump. Here are some reviews taken from the thread on Metroid2002. 'Like most romhacks, the difficulty is ramped up, only this time, it's the damage output of Planet Eris' inhabitants rather than ludicrously precise jumping with instant death as a result of your failure. Personally, I find this kind of difficulty to be a whole lot better really as it requires skill in choosing your enemies and knowing when to flee rather than just run n'gunnin. For once, exploration takes the priority in the game play rather than arbitrary difficulty. There are hidden goodies everywhere in this well decorated landscape.
The missile pickups are dramatically cut down to the point where you'll be needing to hunt the missiles down rather than just say 'cool, more missiles'. There's a few new gizmos for you to play around with as well, but I won't spoil that for anyone. The world itself is just beautiful. This is the first hack I've seen to use this many customized tiles. The music in the areas was carefully chosen to impact the ambient affect and it really shows. The creepy areas look and sound creepy and the lonesome places do the same. Give it a try, but don't be alarmed by the difficult enemies, it's truly a marvelous experience.'
-BusterLogic 'Not even Redesign left me this speechless.' -Bloodsonic 'This hack is extremely epic, I can't help but stare at each and every room, difficulty is tough but it just makes finding stuff that much better!
Wow, I'm pretty much speechless, absolute masterpiece.' -daltone 'A beautiful hack all round; fantastic work. The environments were great with tons of detail and uniqueness.' -Derakon 'It's the kind of hack that I've wanted to see for years, a complete re imagining of super metroid. Thanks so much for this.' -shiidii 'This game is the definition of Epic. The exploration is intense most of the time, but that makes it even more of an accomplishment when you find stuff.

One of the best, if not THE best hacks ever made.' -squishyichigo 'Holy fucking shit this was epic. I've never played a game that's actually made me feel this excited and this worried for the character when I'm playing it. All of the exploration made me frustrated, but it was a good kind of frustrated.
I felt lost, and all of the stone statues everywhere made me stop and think sometimes, 'What happened to these people to turn them to stone?' I absolutely enjoyed going into the deep and fighting the rest of the bosses. Amazing stuff. I loved the whole hack, and I think it really deserves a sequel.' -CyclopsCaveman 'Not really much more to say than this hack is a Masterpiece.' -ChozunSDA 'This would have to be the best SM hack I've played, the effort put into it really shows.' Too epic, and when I say 'too', I mean, I just shat.
But seriously, I had tons of fun with this game, the backgrounds were so great they were almost annoying at how they integrated so well with the foreground and it's surroundings.' -TAxxOUTBR3AKxx 'This hack is definitely the BEST HACK EVER even it's 'just' a minihack!!!
Every Metroid fan have to play this! You can't even describe this with a million words!' -Black Falcon 'The areas were done beautifully. The mix of layers is superb, and made the hack look like completely new GFX were used, though they weren't.'
-Sadiztik Fish 'I would say this is tied with Redesign as the single best hack of Super Metroid ever made.' -Televangelist 'This game was like what a true 'Super Metroid II' would have been like! As someone posted earlier, it felt like I was in places I never, ever should be in!
I think it felt like that, sort of like it feels when your in a weird dream where the places are familiar, but oddly different. The long elevator down to Spore Spawn is like a nightmare come true, and the water reflections were truly beautiful. Other parts felt like I was Samus running around inside Castlevania!' -Jinx 'Enjoyable hack.
Highlight for me are definitely the amazing colour changes, and creative background- and level design that bring a totally different atmosphere in pretty much every sector to the game.' -Saturn 'It was a 'pretty cool hack bro'.' -Cpadolf 'Wow, just wow is all I can say at this point, Dmantra you have set a new standard for metroid hacks. This is by far my favorite Super Metroid hack I have ever played. As far as quality and innovation go I'd say this is on equal footing with Redesign.' -Thane 'Just a word from someone who has seen, worked on, and played (some of) Eris: Usually when playing hacks, I.feel. like I'm playing a hack (you all know what I mean).

Being constantly reminded that something is a hack depresses me and I generally lose interest after a while (there are exceptions to this, of course, but they are few and far in between, imho). Eris is an exception to this. Even though it does have a 'mini' feel to it (as DMantra already pointed out), it actually feels like I'm exploring a new world (ie- not just playing a rehashed version of the same thing again). I don't play many hacks (ironically), but this is one I definitely will be playing through when it's officially time.'
I just got my second missile expansion (trust me, that's farther than you think. I've been playing for about an hour and a half) but I think the progression is very good in an atmospheric way. When I got to the area I'm in now, I thought 'I'm not supposed to be here.' But as I hesitantly went through the area, I started uncovering more and more passages and figured out that yes, I am supposed to be here. The hack does a very good job in presenting its atmosphere through both the music/graphics as well as the level design.
I think the level design is very interesting. The levels are creepy, to be honest. Just a little bit ago, I felt like I was going through a Castlevania game because there were a lot of burnt shrubbery and old decayed eye statues. I enjoyed Legacy (not enough to 100% it, damn some things were bizarrely hidden), but pretty much hated Redesign. Those are the only two I thought looked good enough to play.
I'll try this once October kicks in, thanks. While we're here, any other awesome hacks to go with? Maybe not even hacks, but fan-made Metroids in general. I know there's the Metroid 2 remake still going on that looks rad but nothing besides that.
I don't wanna derail the thread though, so maybe not. Just a quick heads up will be nice. I enjoyed Legacy (not enough to 100% it, damn some things were bizarrely hidden), but pretty much hated Redesign. Those are the only two I thought looked good enough to play.

Just a quick heads up will be nice. Yeah I feel the same way.
I love the Metroid series for the exploration, and the upgrading Samus and getting stronger. Shit like the overly complicated shine sparking I actually hate, loathe with a passion.
There's a few expansions in Zero Mission I will never get because the shine sparking to get them is just absolutely beyond annoying to me. Alot of these hacks seem to want to put crazy emphasize on this crazy only the most hardcore sequence speed runners can accomplish shine spark sequences. I really hope that one dude finishes the Metroid 2 remake soon. That looks like it has a lot of potential. Would be awesome to see that come out and have a way to play it on Wii homebrew.
Yep, IPS patches are applied to ROM images. One of the more common IPS patchers is called Lunar IPS. It can be used to hard-patch the ROM. However, most modern emulators can soft-patch the ROM at run-time if the ROM and the IPS patch share the same exact name (save for their extensions, of course) and are stored side-by-side in the same folder. For my part, I'm a pretty big fan of playing classic games on-the-go via the PSP, but I don't think the PSP's only real SNES emulator supports soft-patching.
So in my case, that means using something like Lunar IPS to create a new, patched ROM that the emulator CAN load.
